The Paleolithic Era
(Old stone age); Human Evolution; Hominids; World History
The
Paleolithic Era (Or the Old stone age) started about 6-7 million years ago.
During this time, the first humans called hominids started to develop tools by chipping
pebbles, stones, bones, wood, and lots more.
The first
Hominids lived in Africa long time ago, changing over time. Here is a list of
some well-known types of hominids.
Australopithecus:
The first hominids were called Australopithecus, meaning “southern ape” and was
around 4.4 million years ago. Australopithecus, were nomads, meaning that they
traveled frequently to find food without a permanent home. One famous
Australopithecus named Lucy; taught many scientist facts they weren’t accurate
about. For example, many archeologists
believed that hominids used tools when hominids walked upright. But Lucy proved
them wrong by standing upright, but not being able to use tools. The only
objects Lucy used was sticks and stones to dig and break food.
Homo Habilis:
Meaning “able man”, homo habilis were the first hominids to use stone tools. They
were around 2.5 million years ago, which was during the first quarter of the Paleolithic
period. They had bigger brains than the Australopithecus
Homo erectus:
about 1.8 million years ago, Homo erectus were more developed and was able to
walk upright. Even though many hominids walked upright before the Homo erectus,
they had longer limbs to make them look more like a human. Around 500,000 years
ago, the Homo erectus figured how to make fire. This was a great help for
cooking, hunting and lots more. And sense fire gave them warmth, they were able
to leave Africa and to travel colder climates.
Homo Sapiens:
Homo Sapiens, also known as “wise men” were around 400,000 years ago. They had
larger brains, and smaller jaws. A Homo Sapiens arms and legs were longer than
the Homo Erectus. There are kinds of Homo Sapiens. One of them are Neanderthals.
Neanderthals lived-in modern-day Europe and some areas of Turkey. The other
type is Homo Sapiens Sapiens.
Homo Sapiens
Sapiens.: Homo Sapiens Sapiens, meaning “wise wise human” is the group of humans
we see today. They first appeared in Africa and populated the world about
100,000 years ago. Many archeologist say that Homo Sapiens Sapiens might have moved
only about two-three miles in a whole generation.
